Transportation in & around London

London Underground (The Tube)

Pocket tube maps are available at any tube station. Pay attention to the electronic signs on the platforms as to which trains are approaching; some tube lines may split directions later down the line, so be aware and make sure the train is headed in the direction you need. Trains display their final destination on the front of the train above the driver and some trains may terminate at an earlier location rather than the final stop on the line. You will most likely not be traveling outside of zone 1 unless going to the airport, so you will most likely not have to deal with these complications. Individual tickets are sold at the tube stations as well as week passes to various zones. Take notice of the operation times of the tube in various stations. Generally, the trains begin operating around 6am and stop around 1230am.

Buses

You can find a bus stop on almost every corner and all display a sign as to which bus numbers stop there and the list of locations it serves. Typically, the bus is cheaper although depending on traffic, the tube may be faster. At the bus stops, maps can be found of all routes in case you need to take more than one bus to reach a destination. Buses typically run later than the tube, especially to and from airports.

Taxis

Use only the “Black cabs” with signs posted on the front. They have certified drivers and a flat rate, while other “cabs” will charge much higher. The hotels can accommodate you in ordering a cab for an early departure if necessary.
